<image:caption>FGM is the forcible removal of the external female genitalia for non-medical reasons. It is recognized internationally as a human rights violation and a form of torture. This cultural, non-religious practice is gender-based violence intended to control women and girls. FGM causes death, hemorrhaging, infection, pain, infertility and sexual dysfunction, maternal and infant mortality, and lifelong psychological trauma. For more information, see this FGM fact sheet from the World Health Organization.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Janay Johnson has been a member of GWPF since March 2020. During her MPH program at George Washington University, Johnson wrote a training manual on FGM for Virginia Middle Schools and High Schools nurses and teachers. The manual provides guidance for how educators and service providers can use evidence-based interventions to identify strategies and best practice models to eliminate the practice of FGM. As a member of the Resource Development Team (RDT), Johnson helps raise funds to support the annual 5k Walk to End FGM, sponsorship for vaginal restorative surgery, and tuition scholarships. Johnson was a 2022 Global Woman Student Ambassador Award recipient. Johnson is currently pursuing her PhD in Maternal Child Health from the University of Maryland.</image:caption>

      <image:title>About Us - Crystal Force</image:title>
<image:caption>Crystal Force came to us as a student in December of 2023 to complete part of her requirements for a Master of Science in Public Health from George Washington University. While her career as a veterinarian has forged a solid analytical background, her training as a marriage and family therapist and certification as a sexologist encouraged her to seek out the Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation as the site for her practicum project. Crystal understands that violence against women and girls is a primary global health concern. She has also been aware of female genital cutting and mutilation since she was in high school back in the 1980s. While she firmly believes in healthy cultural traditions, Crystal understands that some traditions are more harmful than those who practice them realize. FGM/C is one of those traditions that Crystal would like to see stopped. Crystal’s practicum projects included updating the survivors’ group explanation document and consent to participate forms. Her more significant projects included participating in GWPF’s annual retreat, where she gave a presentation on mindfulness and meditation, facilitating a survivors’ group discussion on female sexual health and wellbeing, and writing a document for women to use to talk to their children (and family members) about FGM/C. The latter two can be found on the GWPF resources site and will be available to the general public. Following the end of her practicum and graduation from George Washington University, Crystal continues to volunteer with GWPF through her work with the Support Group and as part of the Resource Development Team. She also assists with the annual Walk to End FGM.</image:caption>
